A SELECTION of classical concerts will be on offer from September onwards, courtesy of Abbotsholme Arts Society.

Organisers promise the 47th season of the society's programme will offer an array of events, mainly taking place in the chapel at Abbotsholme School in Rocester.

Rachel Podger with Brecon Baroque will begin the season on Sunday, September 21, with works by Vivaldi and Bach.

Other group performances will include string quartet Cuarteto Casals, Dutch group Calefax Reed quintet, UK piano group Trio Apaches, eight-piece cello ensemble Cellophony and vocal ensemble Blossom Street.

Soloists include leading oboist Nicholas Daniel, who will be on stage in November alongside pianist Julius Drake, Canadian violin virtuoso James Ehnes and Russian piano star Boris Giltburg.

Abbotsholme will also continue its tradition of fostering young talent by welcoming Japanese pianist Aisa Ijiri in April.

The season will culminate in a performance by Derby Academy of Classical Dance in the school theatre as a fund-raising event for the society, one of Britain's leading provincial music clubs.

Extra concerts are occasionally added to the season programme, usually as fund-raising events.

Tickets can be purchased in advance, and a discount is available to the society's subscribers.
