Ashbourne Aztecs Lions under-13s eased to victory in a mid-table battle against Chellaston.
The Lions started in determined mood and soon Peter Linley’s accurate corner fell to Marcus Lumbard, whose shot was helped into the goal by the in-form Ben Warner.
The Lions then were caught out by a goal from Chellaston when the ball bounced awkwardly in the goalmouth and Alex Cranstone could not get to it.
The Lions kept the pressure on with the whole team playing a brilliant passing game despite the muddy conditions.
Marcus Lumbard was fouled just outside the box but could not quite take advantage with the free-kick, which was saved by the Chellaston keeper.
He was fouled again shortly after and Toby Doran stepped up to slot home a well-struck penalty.
He and Daniel Harrison dominated the midfield and when called on, Tom Dixon and Daniel Morton, Oscar Wainwright and Ben Bryan in defence remained calm and put in some well timed tackles to keep the score 2-1.
The Lions began the second half in the same determined mood and Archie Shaw and Callum Hellaby provided some extra pace in the middle and Dominic Simpson-Allsop and Morton combined well to get the ball to Harrison, who battled well throughout.
The Lions thought they had scored again but Ben Warner’s long range goal was disallowed.
Simpson-Allsop had to leave the field with an injury but the Lions were determined to fight to the end and their determination paid off when Toby Doran got his second goal two minutes from the end, his shot bobbling through the mud to just make it into the net.
