WINTERY showers were the order of the day as Ashbourne Aztecs Under-11s eased past Gad Khalsa at Osmaston Park in Derby.
Luke Zona was the first to score for Aztecs, striding towards goal he coolly slotted the ball past the away team’s keeper, and Calum Wood followed with another excellent goal to make the score 2-0 at half-time.
The supporters watched some outstanding play from the Juniors, and the addition of the new players to the team this season – Jack Beresford, Jack Green, Owen Bailey, Wood and Ben Holloway –are now beginning to gel with their fellow team mates, each one making their manager very proud in this game.
The passing was superb despite the heavy conditions and the old heads of Ben Johnson, Tyler Burton, Zona, James Donlan and Adam Leigh used their experience to cover two key players absence from the team today, which could have made the team weak at the back.
This was not to be, as Aztecs stood strong and Zona followed up with the third and final goal towards the end of the second half to put the game to bed.
In the closing stages, Donlan had a shot go over the cross bar and Burton, misjudging his strike by skimming the mud, did not give the shot enough power.
