FOLLOWING a number of disappointing pull-outs and let downs, Ashbourne-based boxer Max Wainwright was fit and hungry for his second contest on a Burnley dinner show last week.
As predicted, loud home town support influenced the young Burnley boxer to come out swinging, but Wainwright was expecting this and tucked up well to ride the initial storm as the red corner wasted energy falling short and hitting gloves.
After a relatively close first session, Wainwright was encouraged to loosen up, letting shots go without looking for the big knock-out shot.
Round two saw a similar fast start quickly die off from the home boxer, before Wainwright started to fall in to a nice rhythm, working the jab with successful regularity and bringing in two and three shot combinations.
Whilst his head was rocked back with a couple of shots, Wainwright was starting to have clear success, with a big straight right landing on numerous occasions.
The hard work for this contest had been done back in the gym and enabled Wainwright to stretch his lead in the final session, boxing well and keeping sensible pressure on his opponent to earn a unanimous win.
