MONEY raised by the Ashbourne Farmers Ball has been passed on to two good causes.

The committee behind the annual social evening met at the Shire Horse in Wyaston to decide on recipients for the two donations, after a decision was taken not to hold a ball this year because of the closure of its usual venue at the Miraj Hotel in Derby Road, where it had been held for many years.

Despite the cancellation of this year’s event the committee managed to set aside £1,100 which was presented by way of two cheques to the charities chosen to receive the funds raised.

The money, which was raised through sales of tickets and other fund-raising exploits, was passed on to the Macmillan Cancer Unit at Royal Derby Hospital and to the Derbyshire Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

The committee has now turned its attention to finding an alternative venue in the area capable of holding around 200 people in the hope that the decades-old tradition can be continued in the future.
