POLICE have received complaints about phone calls being made by a company, claiming to be calling on behalf of Ashbourne Town Council, and enquiring if the recipient has been in an accident.

A spokesman for the council said: "We want to let people know that it is most definitely not anyone from Ashbourne Town Council calling, and we have been in touch with the police to let them know about it."

A Derbyshire police spokesman said: “We have contacted the company that was reported to have called members of the public in Ashbourne, which is a legitimate telesales firm based in Stoke-on-Trent.

“Although it does not appear that any offences have been committed, it is important that people remain vigilant when receiving unexpected calls either over the phone or in person.

“Anyone who wishes to report suspicious calls can contact Derbyshire police on 101 or visit the Action Fraud website for advice on how to protect themselves from fraud.”
