SIX veterans of the Normandy landings joined people in Ashbourne to mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

Private John Taylor, from the 2nd Battalion, Mercian Regiment, sat with veterans Bill Millward, Derek Manifold, Sam Chell, Bill Russell, Roy Russell and Rees Evans at St Oswald's Church for the service on Monday.

The event commemorated the landings, which were a major contribution to the Allies' victory in the war – but saw thousands of men lose their lives.

Earlier in the day, the veterans were among a small group that gathered at Ashbourne's memorial gates.

They laid wreaths in memory of the soldiers who died in the battle.
