Award winning butcher has nine good reasons to celebrate

AN Ashbourne butcher recently won two championship gold accolades and seven silver awards at a regional BPEX Butcher Roadshow held recently in Newark.

Mark Caple, from Mark’s Family Butchers off Shaw Croft, walked away with the category championship gold prize for his dry cured middle bacon and black pudding.

He also won silver in seven other categories; pork sausage, Slimmer’s Universe sausage, gluten free sausage, hand made pork pie, dry cured smoked back bacon, brawn and fagggots.

Claire Holland, BPEX product marketing manager, said: “We were delighted to see such a great turnout from butchers in the region – 341 entries from 51 butchers is a great result for the East Midlands roadshow.

“And the standards did not disappoint, which made judging incredibly hard. Over a third of the products entered achieved a gold award – scoring 95-100 points out of 100.

“That’s a real testament to the quality of the products being produced by butchers in the region.”
