WITH 602 cattle in the catalogue and the latest snow thankfully melted, buyers had no difficulty finding their way to Bakewell.

Amongst the regulars were significant numbers of new faces bidding at Bakewell for the first time, although trade was such that not all were successful.

Purchasers were present from Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire together with the majority from Derbyshire and surrounding counties.

If the current food labelling and horse meat crisis has done anything for the cattle trade all the evidence at Bakewell was that it was positive rather than negative.

Let us hope that concerns over processed food will bring consumers in to the frame of mind to purchase recognisable cuts of British meat from a reputable supplier.

The sale commenced with breeding stock indicating that confidence is running high. Cows and calves reached £1,450 and stock bulls £2,450, but it was in calf heifers that really captured the imagination and demand was exceptional.

It was the heifers that really rang the bell at this sale.

With the majority only 6-9 months and many coming from the hard hill farms of the Peak District, the prices achieved were little short of astonishing.

One expects the few show quality sorts to hit the highlights, but the general level of trade for the more ‘run of the mill’ bunches was exceptional.
