AS AUTUMN makes its presence felt stock numbers are on the rise with a very busy market at Bakewell with 731 cattle and 3,495 sheep on offer.
A very respectable entry of 309 store cattle saw steers to £1,420 and heifers to £1,425 and no fewer than 66 animals selling at over £1,000. The averages of £858 for steers and £796 for heifers tell the story. If you have store cattle to sell do not hesitate to contact us.
OTM Cattle were out in force with 163 on offer reaching 202p/kg and £1,320 per head despite a very mixed entry the overall average was a remarkable 135.7p.
Finished Cattle numbers were also on the up at 148 with tops of 242p/kg and £1,661 and a small rise in the average to 193.3p.
The Bakewell Calf Section continues to attract larger entries with 111 this week, bull calves sold to £440 and heifers £300.
The sheep section was exceedingly busy with a total of 3,495 forward.
The 2,670 lambs were harder work, but maintained a solid trade throughout.
The SQQ average at 163p was down from 170p last week as more hill bred lambs come forward. The top prices of 200p and £86.54 indicate what the best on offer are currently worth.
Another bumper crop of cull sheep with 825 forward and the best ewes to £138, more plainer and smaller ewes starting to appear resulting in an overall average of £53.90.
163 BARREN & OTM CATTLE – overall average 136.9p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)
The biggest entry for a few months and again an improved trade with the average rising by another 2½p on the week. All cattle look dearer on the week but especially the leanest cows of which there was a high proportion today. Top prices today was a super 202p for a Blue heifers (32mths) from WT Bunting & Son, Pikehall with a ‘one calf’ cow for David Twigg, Bradwell at 192p and a pure Charollais at 186p from Boden & Davies (£1,316).
Best meated cows today generally 160p plus with cross bred and native sorts 140-160p with lean cows selling for feeding regularly today.
90 Black and White and Ex Dairy Cows average 127.5p
Six pence dearer on the week and they certainly looked it with the better bred and fed cows 145p plus selling to 172p for a clean heifer.
Meated Holsteins 135-145p with leaner sorts 120-130p and very plain cows 100-120p. Only a handful today under £1/kilo. Top grossing cow a wonderful £1,320 for Riverside Farmers and £1,261 for Messrs Mycock, Friden.

A larger entry of 3,495 sheep included 2,670 lambs. Demand was slightly easier in line with other markets at the end of last week. Best sorts still peaked at 200p/kg with best meated sorts selling in the 165-180p/kg bracket and small plainer sorts harder to sell.

825 Cull Ewes and Rams
Another very good entry and buyers very strong for the very best goods but generally the ewes contained a high number of grazing and plainer types which was reflected in the average.
Top call £138 for an outstanding Sportsman’s Texel from Boden & Davis at Stockport who actually took 2nd place as well with £127.
The top 8 pens averaged £120.38 and looked a very good trade indeed. Grazing ewes to over £50 per head.
Meated Mules £3-£6 per head steadier than recently but the best still over £72/head.
In the horned ewes the very best strong framed Swales over £52/head but there were only very few of these forward.
The tups were of varying quality to a top of £84 for Texels with others at £78 and £75.
