Bakewell Market

10ºC at 6am on a December Monday Morning is uncommonly mild for the time of year and far away from 12 months ago when it was zero.

There were therefore no travelling difficulties and a useful entry of 475 cattle and 2,362 sheep were on parade. It was back to normal after last week’s Primestock show and rather easier to relate prices and averages to appropriate yard sticks.

To deal with sheep first it was gratifying to see the lamb trade on the rise with a top of 211p, the SQQ average at 175p a full 25p/kg more than the equivalent market last year.

The cull sheep section has also rallied with the 700 plus ewes reaching £118 to average £57.06, up £11 on the week.

There was more confidence too in the cattle sections.

The 111 finished cattle were distinctly dearer than they have been of late with a fine example at 251p and the overall average at 196p, some 13 pence up on a fortnight ago.

The 112 OTM cattle were a mixed lot with the best on offer at 158p and the overall average 104.7p reflecting quality rather than trade.

With the finished cattle section looking rather better such enthusiasm soon rubs off on store buyers eager to restock.

The 188 store cattle looked very well sold indeed and whilst the lack of headline figures indicates few strong cattle, the suckled calves and mid-range stores looked very dear.

Next week on Monday 16th December it is business as usual but please remember there is NO MARKET on 23rd December, so if you wish to sell before Christmas it will have to be next week.
