A PEAL of church bells has echoed around Ashbourne to mark the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Bell ringers at St Oswald’s Church, Ashbourne, rang the peal on Saturday morning.

One of the ringers, Jackie Burns, said: “The peal lasted three hours and 14 minutes and consisted of 5040 changes of Plain Bob Triples, being the maximum possible number of permutations on eight bells.

“The band of eight ringers included Kath Brown, Jackie Burns, Andrew Burns, Canon David Sansum and Maurice Starkey, all current or former members of the St Oswald’s band, plus Pat Halls and Paul Jopp of Derby Cathedral, and conductor Bob Smith of Melbourne.

“Following the peal, the ringers drank a toast to HM The Queen at a local pub.”
