Wednesday's game, 2008

Well, i have just got in kicked the muddy boots off at the door, put my hairnet on and fluffy slippers and sat to write my blog!!!

Today has truly been a B&B event ...NO!!!! not a cheap night's rest and a crozzled banger and egg for breakfast but B&B being BAKER & BROWN...my partner in crime Denise Brown.

Together we follow the ball, tangle ourselves in barbed wire and supply as many players with water as conceivably possible....not only do we do this but we steady Wendy Mawby when the slow gin takes effect, join Bev Oakley in shouting for the down'ards to push it and even pretend that i have the ball stuffed up my coat to try a rubbish attempt to create a diversion, now ok...that sounded good at the time me thinking that i would get manhandled by hundreds of Shrovetide players...a gay guy's dream i guess, but would any serious player even think that i would have the ball up my coat...er...i think not!!!!

We even had a spot of 'breaking and entering' on Green Lane, rather foolishly thinking the ball was on its way to Clifton this year. Denise really needed to take a pee, having seen Billy Webster supplying tea to the police at the end of the road, we decided that Denise would use Billy's lav!...which she did, washed her hands and left leaving Bill none the wiser. It was only as we departed Lucy Brown indicated that a notice on the door politely read SORRY NO UNWANTED CALLERS!!!!!!!

I think this year's games have seen some of the best street and field play I can recall, credit to all the brave lads, and it has to be said lasses that take part and make our tradition so great!....

However it does gall me through and through as a down'ard that we got a few fields from our goal only to lose it to another goal at Sturston. What can we do?? I was so gutted on the way back to the Green Man, but hey.,..it is actually only a game and the game is the real winner in the end.

My paintwork didn't last, neither did Simon's yesterday, so much Simon for your 'cheap' paint that doesn't come off!!! i put about 10 base coats of it on too and still it cracked, im gonna blame it on 'cheap leather' as a good craftsman never blames his tools!!!

Couple of unsung heroes for me this year: Edward Brown for lobbing the ball a distance out of the river towards Clifton and Dan Biggs for taking Denise and myself to Sturston and for being one of the few token down'ard resistance there, apart from Denise and me with vocal support!

My queenie strop did continue in the Green Man Yard when, as I said yesterday, I had my image with the word up'ard above it, I couldn't take it any more and removed it!!!!! Sorry Ed at Leatherbritches!

last of all as the feeling returns to my toes.....LONG LIVE SHROVETIDE!! and all those who make it great!!!
