Yvonne has done it again!

DO YOU remember as a kid wishing you could relive Christmas Day all over again? Then again why Christmas? I'm sure we all have a significant day we wish we could hop into a blue police box and revisit! Well I just have!!!

Not literally in a police box I may add but through my DVD having spent an enjoyable 160 minutes watching the views from the infamous steps of Yvonne Hithersay, or in other words Shrovetide 2008!!!

I can remember back in 1985 going along to Gregory & Lee then as it was and hiring the first video that Yvonne and Harry produced then to take up on a forthcoming visit to Kirkwall in Orkney where they play a simillar hug football game.

I remember as a 12 year old rushing home and reliving all the game over and over again till my hire fee was up, and the same feelings of elation are there today!

How Yvonne manages to get those amazing shots truly encapsulating our game is great, she really knows where to place those infamous steps to capture the essence of the play.

I loved the scenes of people struggling through mud in the Church Fields and one of Philip Tomlinson's shires totally oblivious to the crowds and mixing passively with the spectators!

Views of the ball are peppered throughout with nice touches such as the clock on St Oswald's ringing out four 0'clock when hopes of an early goal seemed to vanish with the fading light!

The goal is recorded on the Tuesday at ahem.....Sturston, apologies but I am a Down'ard, as well as comments from players and spectators.

Events of the lunch speeches are covered and at this point I must offer a personal apology to anyone buying the DVD. If I had known that Yvonne was going to release this I would have 'degayed' my 'camper than a row of chiffon tents' description of the artwork on the balls at the beginning of the film!...But hey!!! You have to be yourself right?

The DVD is available at £10 from our offices at the Ashbourne News Telegraph, Nigel's Butchers and The Wheel Inn with a £2 donation from each sale going to the shrovetide committee to help cover insurance for playing our game!

So Shrove fans, I urge you to go and get this cassette cos if you miss being crushed and shoved by several big men as I did over two days...ooooh er!.....then you can relive it from the comfort of your armchair in your nightie with a box of Malteasers...and maybe if you are lucky you may have a sign on your front door saying NO UNWANTED CALLERS.....right Denise????
