A MODEL railway shop has seen its official opening in Ashbourne and its owner says he hopes it will lead to a new interest in the pastime around the area.

Christian Sayers, who runs the Model Railway Loft with business partners Ed Dawson and Paul Gregory, has opened the shop to make a leap from purely online sales to investing in a retail outlet for his growing firm.

Now around three years old, the company has performed well in the model railway market and is thought to be among the top 10 of its kind in the country.

Its recent grand opening saw some of the firm’s most loyal customers travelling in from as far afield as North Wales to wish the new venture well and enjoy seeing a model railway exhibition, special offers, local beer from Leatherbritches, goody bags and a raffle that raised £150 for the Derbyshire, Leciestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

Mr Sayers, whose parents ran the Ashbourne House shop before it closed several years ago, said: “I can’t believe how many local people have come out of the woodwork and said they are interested in model trains.

“There’s even been a suggestion made of setting up a model railway club and I’d like to hear of anyone else who likes this idea so we can perhaps get something moving.”
