CLIFTON suffered a 148-run defeat in their latest Derbyshire County League match away to Elvaston.
The home side won the toss and elected to bat first, racking up an imposing total of 251-7 from their 50 overs.
Although Ed Wilson had big-scoring Australian Matt Gawthrop lbw without scoring, fellow opener Nick Briars top-scored, falling only one run short of his century when he was bowled by Faisal Khan, who took three wickets but went for 81 runs from his 14 overs.
John Mills finished unbeaten on 54 from 42 balls, with five fours and three sixes.
Wilson took 2-27 from eight overs, with Edward Harvey returning 2-58.
In reply, Clifton could only manage 103 before they were bowled out in the 32nd over.
The only resistance came from Khan (33) and Harvey, who hit 30 from 33 balls at number 10.
Six players scored ducks, with the vastly experienced Naeem Akhtar causing much of the damage. He ended up with fine figures of 6-32 from 15 overs.
While Elvaston are fourth and still in with a shot of promotion, Clifton are seventh, 28 points clear of the relegation places.
They are at home to runaway league leaders Eckington on Saturday.
