IT'S business as usual for Derby Gilbert & Sullivan Company at Buxton Opera House this week when the six-time winners of the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival mount two of the popular operettas from the G&S canon.
After performing at the theatre for the festival since 1996 they were unable to join the competition, which has moved to Harrogate, this year. "Unfortunately, taking part in the festival is an expensive business," says the company's chairman, Andy Loydall. "As a result, we could not afford to take part again this year."
However, the company received an invitation from the Buxton Opera House to take part in their own Gilbert & Sullivan performances at the theatre.
Andy says: "We found this offer very tempting and decided to take the risk and go for it."
Both professional and non-professional companies will be taking part at the Buxton event, with Derby Gilbert & Sullivan Company performing The Pirates of Penzance tomorrow and Friday and The Yeomen of the Guard on Saturday.
"I hope the people of Derby and Derbyshire turn out to support us,'' says Andy.
Tickets, priced £16-18, can be bought by calling 01298 72190 or 0845 1272190 or online at buxtonoperahouse.org.uk.
