AS part of a planned closure programme some of the area’s ‘bring’ sites at car parks, pubs and shop premises will be removed in the coming week.

The site reduction has been brought about because of the success brought about by a household recycling scheme.

Ashbourne families are on target to recycle or compost 55.5 per cent of all household waste - an increase of 1,106 tonnes in a single year – by making use of the Derbyshire Dales District Council’s new household collection service, which was introduced more than a year ago.

The District Council announced in November that, during the same period, use of local bring sites had halved because of the success of the new recycling scheme operated by contractor Serco Ltd.

The council’s environment committee agreed late last year to reduce the number of bring sites in the dales from 98 to 26 to enable local company H W Martin to continue to operate a reduced service at no cost to council tax payers.

The removal programme will be completed by Thursday, January 23.

The District Council has pledged to clean the sites and monitor them to identify any potential future fly-tipping issues.

Any screening will be removed at a later date.

A District Council spokesperson said: “Everything that can be recycled at bring sites can now be recycled at home and we’re delighted the Derbyshire Dales can now boast what is probably the top home recycling figure in the county thanks to local people recycling 8 per cent more than at this time last year.

“We always anticipated that the convenience of the household scheme would impact on our bring sites, that’s why we agreed to annually review the contract with H W Martin.

“To ensure the contract continues at no cost to dales council tax payers it makes sense to close sites that require long travel distances or currently produce very low recycling yields.”

On Tuesday, January 21 sites will close at Biggin and Parwich.

On Wednesday, January 22 the sites due to be removed are at Boylestone, Brassington, Clifton, Cubley, Fenny Bentley, Longford, Norbury, Roston, Thorpe and Tissington.

Finally on Thursday, January 23 sites at Ashbourne Bankcroft centre, Brailsford, Hollington, Osmaston, Shirley and Wyaston will close.
