PRIME CATTLE - Auctioneer: Charles Hollis

Another well supported market.

OTM average 21-24 pence dearer than any other local markets and 10 pence dearer than the market to the North, and this is after including a plain Danish Jersey cow which realised 40p/Kg.

There were few others that made as little as this and on the whole the quality of the Friesian cattle was extremely good with many making 115-130p/Kg. Hazeldine Farms of Watnall topped the section with a Limousin which made 178p/Kg. Almost 100 cattle forward in the clean cattle section 61 Heifers and Steers averaged 181.44 after excluding only 4 which were lean outlining homebred stores.

The highlight in the Steers was from W A Stretton & Son, Etwall who had an entry of 6 Steers which topped at 230p/Kg (£1336.30) Av – 208.32p/Kg (£1235.70). These are his last consignment for this year. Overall trade was better for the quality cattle.

The Faulconbridge family had again another good run in the Steers & Heifers with a top of 217p/Kg (£1312.85) and 219p/Kg (£1281.15).

Other highlights were in the Bulls from P A Hammersley, 220p/Kg (£1366.20) and from G H Paddock, Stone 213p/Kg (£1339.77)

The quality in the Bulls was again much improved but unfortunately a good 50% were plain Holstein s which as everybody knows are difficult to sell.

In all departments it is proven that Farm Assured cattle realise 20p/Kg more money and it is also worthy of a note in the market that our trade is better than anywhere else. Proof by fact that Woolley Brothers go to other markets and although fantastic customers at Christmas haven’t attended normal market in the last eight weeks.
