A SAFETY scheme has been relaunched across the Ashbourne area offering discounted crime prevention kit during the winter.

Operation Illuminate is being run by the Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership, led by the police and Derbyshire Dales District Council.

The scheme will see discounted crime prevention items being offered to householders including timers, indoor and outdoor dusk til dawn light bulbs, door chimes, and shed alarms.

The discounted night safety products are also available at Ashbourne Police Station.

Ashbourne officer, Sgt Steve Edwards said: “Although we live in a low crime area, Dales homes can be a target for thieves.

“Our message to residents, especially in the light of the recent spate of burglaries in an area of Ashbourne, is help yourself by taking a few simple measures such as using dusk til dawn light bulbs and timers, which make the house look occupied when you are away.” Other simple home security measures include: “ Make sure windows and doors are locked when you leave the house or go to bed.

“ Do not leave valuable items, such as mobile phones and laptops on display near windows.

“ Take house and car keys with you to the bedroom at night.

Chairman of the Safer Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership Councillor Lewis Rose, who is also Leader of Derbyshire Dales District Council, added: “Despite the Dales’ record as an extremely safe place to live, work and visit, we absolutely refuse to be complacent and Operation Illuminate is another great example of partners being proactive together.” Anyone with information about burglaries in the area should call the Derbyshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
