In a world packed with hi-tech gadgetry it seems the simple beauty of a blue sky has driven motorists to list a panoramic roof as the most sought-after extra on a car.
With the motoring industry gearing up for a spike in registrations next month in line with the housing market, a survey by dream-car competitions company Best of the Best shows more than two thirds of drivers opted for the stunning skylight ahead of sat-nav, massage seats and a head-up display.
While some luxury marques enable you to splash out on leather coat hooks, umbrellas stored in the doors or whale leather, a survey of 25,000 petrolheads proved a little more down to earth.
And although a sunroof may have a whiff of nostlagia about it, the new panoramic version - opening the length of the roof - is the preferred style.
With air conditioning almost standard in most modern motors it seems car manufacturers have lost favour with the sunroof but drivers miss that overhead view of the world.
Although 21st century gadgetry lost out on top spot, contemporary car toys did claim the other places in the list.
An in-built Sat Nav system came in a close second with a head-up display and parking sensors also in the top five. Luxury and entertainment also featured on the list with a digital TV taking the fourth spot in the wish-list, with a “bells and whistles” audio system in sixth.
Laziness, too, figured high on the list with a remote-controlled boot coming in seventh spot. Massage seats were there in sixth place if the motorist attempted anything too strenuous.
“While we love our cars I think our survey proves that we are all dreamers at heart and life’s simple pleasures are worth making the most of,” said William Hindmarch, founder of Best of Best which has given away more than £14million worth of supercars since it was launched in 2000.
“Most people want their car to have the essential luxuries and the mod cons that make driving easier and more pleasurable but I think they also want something of an experience when they are driving and if a car is not a soft-top then a panoramic sunroof is the next best thing.
“Many of the comments in our survey highlighted the need for comfort and convenience, with massage seats and TVs high on the agenda. Indeed, car technology has come on such a lot that 14 years ago when we started the company the most important extra could have been a cup-holder.
“Being comfortable and happy is obviously important to motorists with seat fabric and a good audio system proving important to them. It shows that cars are far from simply a means for people to get from A-B - they are a lifestyle choice and a style statement which say a lot about our personality.”
