A LANCASHIRE-born woman who has lived in the Ashbourne area since the late 1970s has been celebrating her 100th birthday.

Sarah Mitchell, who currently lives at The Close Care Home in North Avenue, was joined by family and friends all weekend ahead of her big milestone on Monday.

Family members travelled in from as far away as Hong Kong to visit Mrs Mitchell ahead of her big day, which she marked with a party at The Close, where she has lived for the last three years.

Born the youngest of five children and married to her late husband Norman for more than 60 years, Mr and Mrs Mitchell lived in Kilmarnock, Scotland from 1937 until 1956 when the family, including their youngest son, Norman, moved to South Africa.

They returned to the UK in 1959 and lived in Northern Ireland until 1964 when they moved abroad again, to Karachi, Pakistan with Norman Senior’s job in carpet manufacturing.

In 1968 Norman retired and the pair settled in Bideford, North Devon, moving again to Canada in 1975. Three years later, Mr and Mrs Mitchell moved back to Ashbourne, residing in Hulland village, and then in St Oswald’s Crescent in Ashbourne.

Mrs Mitchell has two children, Keith and Norman, three grand children and four great grand children.
