Hundreds of fish trying to reach their spawning ground on the river Lathkill are having to be relocated, as falling water levels have left them trapped.

A 2km stretch of the river, near Bakewell, regularly dries up in the summer, as lower rainfall leads to reduced river flows and lower water levels in lakes and ponds.

This drying up of the river makes it necessary to relocate the fish to an area downstream that flows all year.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency, who is organising the move said around 2,000 fish are expected to be moved from the river in the next few days.
