A ‘SHOP LOCAL’ message will be supported by free parking in Ashbourne town centre during the run up to Christmas.
Shoppers will be able to park in town centre car parks for free from 2pm each day throughout December in a bid to boost trade in the town centre.
The scheme, which is now in its fifth year, has been put in place again by Derbyshire Dales District Council which is encouraging people to shop locally this Christmas by introducing free parking across the district from Saturday, December 1.
The free parking initiative was introduced by the district council in 2008 to help local residents and businesses during the economic recession.
District Council leader Councillor Lewis Rose, said: “Local government continues to deal with funding cut-backs of its own, but while car parking income is vital in supporting the services we provide for the people of the dales we want to do everything possible to encourage people to shop locally.
“Free parking from 2pm throughout December comes on top of residents’ parking concessions which allow local people to park free every day of the year up to 11am and after 4pm.
“So, over the Christmas period, dales residents have free parking for 21 hours each day (before 11am and after 2pm).
“The aim is to help local people and local traders.” Free parking extends to midnight each day
