WOMEN in Staffordshire are being urged to show cancer who’s boss by signing up to a truly dazzling girl’s night out.
Cancer Research UK has chosen Stoke on Trent as the first city in Staffordshire to host it’s new 5k women-only event, known as Race for Life Twilight.
The event has all the unique qualities that make Race for Life so special but will take place during darkness on the evening of Saturday, October 19th.
Now women and girls of all ages, shapes and sizes are needed to join together as a formidable army and step out in a shimmering display of light to stun cancer into submission at the Trentham Estate.
And although the chilly October nights may seem a long way off, Cancer Research UK is encouraging women to sign up now so they have the date in their diaries and have time to get friends and family to join in too.
Katie Martin, Cancer Research UK’s Midlands Events Manager, said: “We’re really excited about launching Race for Life Twilight in Staffordshire. We’re holding this exhilarating new event for the first time in the Midlands this year and we’ve chosen Stoke because we believe our local supporters will really get behind it.
“Race for Life Twilight is an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease. Light is a powerful symbol of hope so we want to see everyone with fairy lights and glow sticks and as many sequinned, spangly outfits as possible.
“Twilight promises all the fun and camaraderie of Race for Life but with the added excitement of a fundraising experience under the stars. Just like Race for Life, it’s not about being fit or fast. Instead it’s a celebration of unity in our fight against all cancers. Women can do the event at their own pace and walk, run or even dance their way around the course if they prefer.”
Katie continued: “Twilight promises to be a lot of fun but there’s a very serious message. Thanks to research, hundreds of thousands of lives have been saved already. And with help from the people of Staffordshire, Cancer Research UK intends to make sure the sun sets on cancer for good.”
Every hour, three people are diagnosed with cancer in the West Midlands so Cancer Research UK is calling on new recruits to enter as well as inviting women who have participated in Race for Life in the past and now want a new challenge to sign up as soon as possible.
Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its ground-breaking research but with help from the people of Staffordshire, the charity intends to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
Money raised through Race for Life Twilight will allow Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the Midlands.
Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, Cancer Research UK was able to spend over £10 million last year in the Midlands on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research.
Event organisers are hoping 1,000 women will take part in Race for Life Twilight in Staffordshire and help raise £56,000 for vital research.
