Put a stop to smoking this October and you could add years to your life in one month. Research published in the British Medical Journal shows that over ten years, the NHS Stop Smoking Service has helped more than 20,000 people to quit smoking long-term, which has helped them gain an amazing 25,000 extra years of life between them compared to if they hadn’t quit.
Next month is 'Stoptober', a campaign run by the NHS, and Heart Research UK is calling on all smokers to grab this opportunity and launch themselves into a smoke-free future this October to help them live healthier, happier and longer lives.
Maybe it’s been on your mind to quit for a while now, maybe you’ve tried before and it didn’t work, maybe you’re not so keen but you know it’s the right thing to do for you and your family - whatever your situation, by stopping smoking for 28 days you are five times more likely to become an ex-smoker and start adding years back to your life again.
So get ready for the challenge and make the month of October count all the more.
Get motivated – think of the benefits
Smoking is the biggest risk factor for heart disease so quitting is the best step you can take for your heart and arteries.
Your breathing and lung function, as well as your sense of smell and taste will improve. Your brain will also be able to happily forfeit that nicotine fix soon. Another gain will be having more energy as you get rid of carbon monoxide in your blood and your oxygen levels go back to normal.
Other bonuses include healthier teeth, gums, fresher smelling breath, smoke-free clothes and hair, all adding up to that new you when you ditch the tobacco.
A packet a day habit can save you up to £230 if you quit throughout October. But even if you spend less on cigarettes currently, remember that it all adds up and could be a welcome extra with Christmas coming up.
By making your car, home and body smoke-free, your children will reap the rewards too (as will your pets).
Sign to stop and get support
Tell your friends, your family, your colleagues you’re stopping so they can encourage and support you and maybe even sponsor you.
