A FAMILY of moorhens have set up an unusual home for themselves, a few feet away from the busy entrance to an Ashbourne supermarket.

These pictures, taken by News Telgraph reader John Fuller-Sessions, show the female moorhen sat on her nest in the culvert by Waitrose supermarket, off Civic Square.

Thought to be sitting on a clutch of eggs, oblivious to the dozen of shoppers passing by every day, the bird’s choice of spot is not said to be anything unusual.

Water bailiff and Ashbourne Field Club member Mike Gadsby said: “As long as people only look at them and they don’t get too close to them, being in a busy spot doesn’t bother them at all and they’ll be perfectly happy there.”

He explained that a clutch of eggs should take around a fortnight to hatch, after which the chicks will follow the mother around on the water but keep returning to the same nest.

He said: “The chicks can swim as soon as they’re born and they’ll bobble about like little balls of black fluff.”
