In the early spring of 2012 Rosemary Roberts of Rose Gardens telephoned East Staffordshire Borough Council for the dates of the forthcoming season’s plant fairs. The plant fairs had been held for many years on public open spaces in Uttoxeter, at Bramshall Road Park and Burton on Trent, at the Stapenhill Cemetery.
Unfortunately, Rosemary was told that due to government cutbacks, the Council would not be running the fairs that year or at any time in the future. This was a blow to Rosemary as being a plants woman she relied on trading at the fairs. However, instead of accepting the bad news she volunteered to take on the running of the fairs herself. This delighted the council’s open spaces officer as it meant that a valuable community event would continue despite the financial cuts. So, Rosemary established Rose Gardens… Plant Fairs with little more than the determination to succeed.
Last year Rosemary successfully ran six plant fairs at the Bramshall Road Park, Uttoxeter. She promoted the fairs through the local media of radio, newspapers and magazines and by hand delivering hundreds of fliers in the community.
This year Rosemary has negotiated with East Staffordshire Borough Council to hold a further six of the fairs at the Shobnall Road Leisure Complex, Burton on Trent.
The nursery men and women who trade at the fairs are extremely passionate and knowledgeable about their plants. So, anyone buying plants from them will be reassured that they will receive first rate information as they will be buying from the person who grew them. Therefore, not only do people get a wide selection of locally produced plants to choose from, at very competitive prices, there is also free advice to go with them.
There are several award winning nurseries whose passion for their particular variety of plants is inspirational to gardeners. There can also be found varieties of plants which have been propagated or sourced by the grower that are no longer available in the usual garden centres, as well as an excellent selection of the more popular herbaceous perennials, fuschias, shrubs, herbs, vegetable plants and annuals.
There is something at a Rose Gardens… Plant Fair for everyone. From the keen amateur who needs lots of advice to the more experienced gardener who is looking for something a little different.
