Sunlight: Keep any upholstery out of direct sunlight, as after prolonged exposure it may show signs of fading.

However, on a warm sunny day, leaving your upholstery cushions and covers outside in the sunshine is a great way to help remove any minor marks or smells.

The ultra violet light reacts to all kinds of stains, unwanted odours and bacteria and acts as a natural deodoriser.

Water: This can be one of the most helpful remedies when it comes to at least partially removing a stain. Most stains can be made less effective by simply rinsing it (not soaking) as soon as the accident happens.

The key to removing as much of the stain as possible is making sure you extract all of the water.

When large items of furniture have been sitting in the same position for a significant period of time the weight can leave lasting imprints on your carpet.

Many people rely on ice to remedy any carpet dents from furniture

Ice: Pop an ice cube straight from the freezer onto the affected area and leave it to slowly melt.

The moisture from the ice cube will soften and plump up the fibres of the carpet. Then gently dab dry with a clean cloth.

This will work on either woollen or nylon carpets.

Lemon oil: Wiping the surface of a natural wood floor with lemon oil and a dry cloth will bring out the natural colour of the wood, leaving you with a soft sheen, not to mention a pleasant lemon smell throughout your home! This is a great tip for natural and waxed flooring; however it is not appropriate for varnished floors.

Vodka: To tackle a stain on your upholstery or carpet immediately, a dab of vodka or gin works well, dab and blot until the stain is reduced or removed.

Bicarbonate of Soda: This is great for removing or reducing odours.

Sprinkle over your carpet and gently work in. Leave for a day and then thoroughly vacuum away.

You should always pre test in an inconspicuous area of your upholstery before tackling stain removal yourself.
