A FAMILY firm's vision for a new tourism, business and education hub near to Carsington Water has fallen at the first hurdle.

CW Sellors, which has a shop in Victoria Square and a head quarters in King Street, put forward a planning application for a 'centre of excellence' which would incorporate a new manufacturing base along with a visitor centre and education facilities, but it failed to win over members of Ashbourne's planning committee at a meeting on Tuesday.

Members of the Derbyshire Dales District Council's Southern Area Planning Committee agreed with planning officer Bill Shaw that the design of the building was 'exciting' but were not keen on its location, in fields a stones-throw from the shores of Carsington Water, off the B5035.

Despite a last-minute promise that an archaeological survey would be carried out prior to any work taking place, the committee voted against the application.
