A reply from the giant

IN THAT little town called Ashbourne, in the street named after the King, the townspeople were left wondering what would happen next after the big giant had been through their little, much loved public space by the river where they walked, sunbathed, ate their summer lunches on the picnic tables, read ‘The Stunner’ every Wednesday, and generally watched the world go by.

The big giant had gone away leaving natural habitat by the river.

What many townspeople did not know was that a large tank holding sewage from the town was now built in the space and to which large sewage tanker lorries needed to come on a regular basis.

Also more extensive work, to build even more new river walls in the street named after the King, the street named after the railway station, and the lane named after the school, has been planned to start in spring 2010 and the area that the townspeople of Ashbourne loved so much will again be used by the Big Giant.

However, sadly, it may not be possible in future to sunbathe and picnic in an area where sewage tanks and lorries are close by.

That is why the picnic tables have been permanently removed by the council in the little town.

The area is re-designated a flood plain and this became evident when the little town of Ashbourne was flooded in June 2008 and property close by was underwater.

All good fairy stories have happy endings; and the people from those far off places who are paying for the work to be done will ensure the land is restored when all the works are complete in 2011.

The new designation of the area however is not decided by the Big Giant or his helpers but by the Environment Agency and Severn Trent water in conjunction with the local district council, and the little town of Ashbourne’s Town Council.

Hoping this explains the very latest in this long story.
