Please keep litter at bay

WE ARE told that major sources of litter are from people dropping rubbish on the pavement or from cars and from fly-tipping.

I would add that another major source is Derbyshire Dales District Council itself, from the recycling centre in Mayfield Road, Ashbourne.

After a windy spell the area down-wind of this site is strewn with very large amounts of litter, mainly in the hedge rows around the Strovetide Football statue.

There was a clear-up a week or so ago but wind in the last 48 hours has totally re-littered the area.

See the attached photographs of the area near the cemetery and football statue, a fine welcome to visitors to Ashbourne.

Surely there must be a mechanism for waste delivered to the recycling centre to be safe within the site and not be blown over the whole neighbourhood.

PS: I clear this litter up from around my own property next to the cemetery and often this occupies more volume than my own domestic  waste in our wheelie bin.

RESPONSE from Derbyshire County Council: “We’re very sorry that some litter has blown away from our household waste recycling centre during the recent high winds.

"Staff have been litter picking throughout the weekend and this morning and will continue to do so until it’s cleared up.

"Staff litter pick as soon as possible, whenever there’s a need. If local residents spot a problem please would they Call Derbyshire on 08456 058 058 or 01629 533190 and we’ll get it sorted.”
