Shrovetide should be respected

Written byBY GARETH BUTTERFIELD

I AM referring to posts made on Facebook by Shrovetide players.

It is and always will be a great privilege to play the game of Royal Shrovetide Football and an even greater honour to score.

Other respected players have commented on how good it is for these young players to be in the draw.

Well, disrespecting the goal and the game, as they have done, is shameful and totally out of order.

If this is how they are going to behave then their ball may as well be cut up and destroyed as it has no meaning.

Please tell me if this is right or wrong.

You only have to look back at last year’s game and how the Down’ard goal scorer conducted himself, to show the real meaning of Shrovetide.

If behaviour like this continues then the names going in to the draw will need to be scrutinised and discussed thoroughly before hand.

I am of the opinion that this year’s goal scorer at Clifton should not have even been in the draw and that I was right all along.

PAUL GUY HARRISON (NEIGHBOUR) FORMER GOAL SCORER
