Similar tales of guns in fishpond

I WAS interested to read the letter from Bill Millward about the two field guns which used to be sited either side of the front door to Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School.

I know photographs of them exist, because I remember seeing an old school photograph with them in position.

As to Bill’s question about why they were dumped in the fishpond, I believe that they were, in fact, German artillery guns, brought back as trophies or mementoes of the First World War.

At the time to which Bill refers, the 1920s, anti- German feeling was still running high, and an angry crowd seized the guns and wheeled them to what became the fishpond when the Recreation Ground was built, and pushed them in.

I have no knowledge as to what became of them after that.
