OLYMPIC athlete Donna Kellogg MBE lit up Ashbourne for Christmas with the help of Olympic torchbearer Megan Mosedale at the weekend.
The official lights switch-on was attended by around 300 people in Ashbourne’s Market Place on Saturday evening, with town Mayor, Steve Bull hosting the event.
Councillor Bull welcomed civic dignitaries from surrounding towns to the event, which included entertainment from an um-pah band and a short fireworks display to mark the lights being turned on around the town centre.
Councillor Bull said: “I was very pleased with the turn-out. I think the crowd enjoyed the entertainment and the atmosphere was very nice.
“We had one or two teething problems with the lights, which can happen to anyone putting their lights up at Christmas time, but they should be all sorted by the end of the week.
“I think we’ve moved forward towards making the lights switch-on a bigger event and the town council feels that it’s a night where we could make a little bit more of it.
“I went to Leek on Friday night and there were hundreds of people in the town for their switch-on. It’s something we could do as well to help the traders and get the Christmas season up and running.
“Donna was very nervous, but proud and pleased that we asked her to come and switch on the lights with help from Megan Mosedale who is a lovely girl and was also chuffed to be asked to do it.”
