AN arson attack on a Derbyshire leisure centre has left it severely smoke-damaged.
Fire crews from Ashbourne and Wirksworth were called to Ashbourne Leisure Centre, in Clifton Road, on Saturday night just before 11pm.
They discovered that a fire started deliberately in a bin had spread to the building and they needed breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to deal with the situation.
Roof sheets were removed so that the firefighters could check for hot spots in the void above the centre and two of them entered an upstairs room, wearing breathing apparatus, to deal with a fire they discovered.
Firefighters left the scene almost three hours after the call-out and the police are now investigating.
A spokeswoman for Derbyshire police said a man has been arrested on suspicion of arson.
