A WELCOME break in the winter weather allowed Mayfield Panthers Under-12s to resume their season with a comprehensive win over Uttoxeter Black that cemented second place in BJFL Division One and widened the gap between the leading trio and the chasing pack.

Although Uttoxeter were bigger physically, they could not match Mayfield for football, and after early resistance had been broken down, Panthers won the contest at a canter.

The initial breakthrough came when Jack Edge’s centre evaded the goalkeeper and Kieran Richardson got the final touch to stab the ball home.

Mayfield doubled their lead before half-time when a sweeping move from back to front ended with Josh Barnes firing the ball into the roof of the net.

The important third goal went to Mayfield at the start of the second half as Sam White rounded off a slick passing move.

Uttoxeter’s resolve began to crumble, with Panthers even winning the aerial battle despite having a height disadvantage.

As the Mayfield defence shut out the opposition to record a welcome clean sheet, the rout was completed with further goals from Matthew Moody, Mason Smith, and a second one by Barnes.

PANTHERS: Greatrex, Birch, White, Wallis, Land, Pickering, Moody, Robson, Breeze, Smith, Richardson, Edge, Barnes.
