ASHBOURNE'S first team slipped to a second defeat of the season at the weekend – but the seconds opened their 2014 campaign with a win.

Rob McCurrach's 44 was the highlight of a stuttering innings of 133-9 for the firsts away at Darley Abbey seconds in County League Division 7S.

Darley Abbey had little trouble in chasing down the total, losing three wickets and getting there in the 30th over with their captain, Mick Woolley, on 36 not out.

The seconds posted 175-9 at home to Castle Donington seconds in Division 10S, with Chris Fryer top-scoring on 38.

Dave Wood (25 not out) and Tim Rider (27) added valuable late runs in a partnership of 55 for the eighth wicket.

Castle Donington were winkled out over the course of 38 overs for 87, with two wickets each for Vinnie Pegg, Fryer and new captain Brynn Williams.
