AN ASHBOURNE village is getting ready to hold its annual boat race and bridge jump, with a reminder that anyone wanting to enter a team still has time.

Charles Wimbush, the event organiser, said: “Anyone who is sober and can swim and is up for a challenge is most welcome to the jump.

“For the rest of us the walk to the bridge at Mappleton to see the race at 12pm on New Year’s Day is a wonderful way to clean out the cobwebs and start the New Year.

“There will be sights for sore eyes and good food from Super Nosh for everyone.”

“Last year’s event went very well but the early high waters had left a lot of people thinking the race would be cancelled, and so a lot of people missed this spectacular event.

“This year there is an excellent charity for the event, the Ashbourne defibrillator project backed by town councillor Ann Smith. Anyone wanting to enter should contact Phil Rosenbrock on 07980 189602.
