AN ASHBOURNE councillor is gearing up for his second sponsored walk on crutches to highlight the difficulties faced by injured and disabled service personnel.
Former Ashbourne Mayor and Derbyshire Dales District Council chairman Tony Millward is planning his second six-mile sponsored walk, this time in the Derbyshire Dales town of Bakewell on Saturday, March 30.
In August Councillor Millward, supported by soldiers from the Mercians and the Mercian Regimental Mascot, LCpl Derby, a pedigree Swaledale, ram took to the country roads around Ashbourne for his walk.
He said: “From my last walk on crutches last year I now know what to expect. It really was the toughest six miles I’ve ever tackled.
“But any discomfort I felt on that occasion and will encounter again at the end of March is nothing compared to what our wounded personnel go through, and that’s the plight I want to highlight.”
Sponsorship pledges and donations can be made at a bric-a-brac and cake stall at Ashbourne Market on Saturday, March 23 or by calling 01629 761301.
