ASHBOURNE’S Police Sergeant Steve Edwards has thanked News Telegraph readers for helping to collar a pair of youths who were terrorising an elderly woman.
The Compton police station was contacted by four readers who gave information following last week’s appeal that has led to two youths being identified and visited by officers.
The “distressed” pensioner, who did not want to be identified, was allegedly targeted by two boys aged between nine and 11 in the Hill Top area of the town.
Police told the News Telegraph the boys repeatedly targeted her in a concerted campaign of harassment and intimidation by shouting abuse and banging their fists on the doors and windows of her home, usually between 6pm and 7pm, before making off down a nearby alleyway.
Sergeant Steve Edwards said: “As a direct result of the article I have been contacted by four different people giving useful information, I have been to see two families as a result of this and to date the nuisance has stopped. The lady concerned is very relieved to get some peace back in her life.
No criminal charges have featured yet but if it should start again the offenders will be dealt with robustly, we will be monitoring the situation very closely.
“I would like to thank readers who took the time to speak to their children about the disgraceful behaviour and particularly like to thank the four people that came forward with the information .”
