THE forecast storm and tempest never arrived in Derbyshire, but such was the dire nature of the warnings that entries were definitely adversely affected with numbers down at 616 cattle and 2,425 sheep.
Sheep numbers in particular were down by around 500 head which may in part have assisted the trade. It was good to see lambs on the rise again with an overall average of 176p some 13p better on the week. A decent entry of cull sheep, not as many as we have seen of late, but 723 is still a useful total and with ewes to £131 and rams to £145, a very satisfactory trade too.
In the cattle departments the 350 stores maintained recent price levels with steers to £1,390, heifers £1,100 and feeding bulls £1,140. All categories in good demand with cows and calves topping at £1,430.
OTM numbers similar to last week with trade much the same, the best on offer reaching 159p and £1,447 per head.
The finished cattle section with 92 on offer was a mixed lot with plenty of trade for well meated sorts topping at 236p for a steer and grossing up to £1,642. Those cattle that were not blessed with as much finish were harder work to sell and priced accordingly.
Calf numbers much reduced possibly due to weather troubles. Bulls to £358 and heifers £318.
Despite the wind and rain temperatures have remained uncommonly mild for the time of year, but must surely change as we move in to November.
121 BARREN & OTM CATTLE – overall average 109.1p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)
A good entry of cows again this week and trade remains very similar, not better but no worse than the last couple of weeks. Meat is very much in demand and was good to sell with some improved orders at ringside but on the flip side the lean cows are very difficult to sell well. Best beef cows today sold from 142p-159p with cross bred types 120-140p. 14 Native bred cows also sold well with the best to 147p.
83 Black and White and Ex Dairy Cows average 104p. A very high proportion of the entry with a number of the cows showing the weather conditions and the hard work in the parlour at home. Top today was 159p for a young sort from David & Vicky Watts, Thurgoland with other overage clean heifers at 152p, 149p, 148p, 148p etc. Best cow sold to 135p for Roger Ardern (£1,198) with other good cows over 128p. Fed Holsteins sold from 115-125p with leaner sorts 100-110p. Very plain cows under £1. Small hard worked Jerseys sold from 40-50p.

92 FINISHED CATTLE – overall average 183.3p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

Plenty of demand for Continental crosses, native breeds and black and whites and no shortage of custom after the suckled calves that are now appearing in greater numbers.

53 CALVES (Auctioneer Ben Furnival)
A smaller entry largely to do with the weather I would imagine. Black and whites on a cracking trade for any rearing types with best Continentals a good trade although a couple of larger shapey sorts may have been a few pounds dearer in previous weeks.
Top of the day being £358 for a lovely Limousin from Mr Mellor who had another to £350. Second spot went to Mr Halford with a lovely young Limousin to £355 who also had a smart Friesian to £240.

723 Cull Ewes and Rams
A very good entry inspite of the national weather forecasters getting very wrong for our region.
The vendors were all well rewarded for turning out with trade fast for all sectors bar the smallest plainest types.
Top of the day £131 for a great Texel from the Furness’s at Middle Farm, Suffolks topped at £120 for David Prince at Highfield House with the top 8 lots averaging a massive £119.75. Generally best Mules in the mid/top £60 bracket with all good strong crossbred Suffolk and Texel meated ewes a fast trade.
Best Swales in the £40 bracket with various grazing purchasers operating for the plainer types in each category.
The tups a very good trade with several over £120 per head and a top of £145 for a Texel from the Hadfield family at Chamber Farm.
