THE temporary return of summer did not affect entries despite many farmers catching a last cut of silage or baling or carting straw.
719 cattle and 2,684 sheep kept everyone busy with cattle prices holding solid and sheep results pleasingly better.
A tremendous show of 364 store cattle sold yet again on a cracking trade with the best steers to £1,320 ad heifers to £1,240. Clearly no shortage of demand for feeding cattle of all descriptions.
OTM Numbers staying up with 151 on offer and plenty of interest shown with the best to 170p and £1,296 per head.
122 Finished cattle reached a top of 246p/kg and £1,483, trade assisted by the presence of a new buyer.
Only 82 calves this week with prices looking strong – bulls to £410 and heifers £330.
In the sheep section there was a better feel to the trade than has been the case for a couple of weeks. The best pen of lambs reached 212p and the top gross of £90.40 indicated higher spirits.
The SQQ lamb average of 167p was significantly up on the week despite some hill bred lambs making an appearance.
Another substantial entry of 791 cull sheep met a stronger demand with the best ewes to £110 and Rams to £100.
151 BARREN & OTM CATTLE – overall average 119.6p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)
Another excellent turn out of cows, but with all buyers present the cows were a touch less this week. Overall there are more cows in the system at present and the sterling pound against the euro has made exports harder. Top beef cows today sold in excess of 150p with a high of 165p for David Thorp, Baslow. As always a number of feeding cows in the offering which sold on an excellent trade.
81 Black and White and Ex Dairy cows average 108.3p
The ex-milk cows were again less this week but a top prices of 170p for George and David Brooks, Loxley with a young cow. Generally the best cows 135p plus although they were few and far between. Fed Holsteins 120-130p, leaner cows 105p-120p and very plain cows under £1.
