WORK has started on preparing a giant floral tribute to a former town and district councillor who died this year.
Ashbourne Town Council has been working with Norbury Primary School to design a lasting tribute to deputy Mayor Alan Hodkinson, who was due to become the town’s civic leader in May, a few months after he died suddenly at the age of 59 in January.
It was decided that a giant A would be created on the A52 bypass, which was designed by a Norbury Primary School pupil, and the ground-works began yesterday.
Stuart Lees, Graham Soult and a team of volunteers braved yesterday’s miserable rain showers and strimmed the grass before digging out the shape of an A and planting a a total of 3,000 daffodil bulbs.
The bulbs were paid for by Councillor Hodkinson’s friend and Ashbourne’s current Mayor Steve Bull, who stepped in to take on what would have been Councillor Hodkinson’s fourth term as chairman, Stuart Lees and Ashbourne Gardening Club.
Councillor Bull said: “I was very proud to see it and I hope when it’s in bloom it looks as good as it did this morning.”
