A CARNIVAL atmosphere is set to prevail in Ashbourne in the run up to Christmas this year, with the introduction of a festive parade.
Ashbourne Christmas Carnival is planned to coincide with late night shopping in the town on Friday, December 7.
Now, organisers are appealing for townsfolk, businesses, organisations, groups and schools to take part in the carnival, which will have a definite Christmas theme.
The carnival has been organised by Philip and Christine Fearn and is supported by Ashbourne Town Council, Mr Fearn said: "We need more people getting involved in the carnival, whether they dress up and walk round, ride a bike, decorate a car or go the whole hog and decorate a trailer.
"They can do anything they like as long as it is safe and has a Christmas theme."
The carnival will be just a part of the activities on offer during late night shopping, which will include the Churches Together lantern parade and nativity, street stalls and entertainments organised by Ashbourne Town Council as well as shopping opportunities in the town centre.
The carnival parade will travel through the town at 6pm, with floats parking in Compton afterwards.
Mr Fearn added: "We're meeting in Church Street near St Oswald's Church and we're going to lead the lantern parade. We'll join them at the corner by the Methodist Church.
"It's the first time we have done it and it's a matter of trying to do something different in Ashbourne that people will enjoy.
"We'd welcome schools and groups from the town and surrounding villages. We want to encourage people to come up with ideas for floats, or fancy dress with a Christmas theme, and get involved.
"We just hope that people will get together and join in."
