MORE than 4,000 people have signed up to a money-saving energy scheme run by Derbyshire County Council.

Derbyshire Big Deals is a collective buying scheme which works by bringing people together to get the best price for gas and electricity bills.

The county council teamed up with consumer champions Which? to negotiate cheaper deals for residents signing up to the scheme.

And, each household registering with Derbyshire Big Deals will be entered into a free prize draw for a chance to win free gas and electricity for a whole year.

Leader of Derbyshire County Council, Councillor Andrew Lewer, said: “It is great to see so many people have signed up – the more people who join us, the greater our bargaining power.

“We are really pleased to be working with Which? – a trusted consumer brand – to help local people come together to save money, as well as making it easy to switch.”

Nationally, 60 per cent of people have never switched energy company, even though they could save an average of £217 a year by doing so.

More information about the scheme is online at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/bigdeals, or call the county council’s Big Deals line on 01629 533365.

Households need to register before 6pm on March 20 and will find out how much they could save at the end of the month.
