FLOCKS of sheep have been used by a theme park near Ashbourne in a publicity stunt that attracted national attention.

Bosses at Alton Towers painted the logos that will adorn its newest roller coaster on sheep in Perthshire, North Yorkshire, Middlesborough, Exeter, Melton Mowbray and South Wales and the mysterious markings quickly spread across social networking websites as the farmers involved posted pictures.

The pictures soon went viral as many people re-tweeted the posts and sharing their own thoughts and theories on what the symbol could mean. Katherine Duckworth, of Alton Towers, said: “We wanted to create some mystery around the name of our new world first rollercoaster, The Smiler.

“We’ve managed to baffle the nation and hopefully made a few people smile.”

The ride, which is the resort’s biggest ever investment and will be open later this year, will feature a track the length of ten football fields, gut-wrenching 30-meter drops and hurtling speeds of up to 85km per hour.
