Derby Market

Written byBY GARETH BUTTERFIELD

PRIME CATTLE - Auctioneer: Charles Hollis

There is only one word – through the roof!

It was thought when the horse meat situation first came on the boil that the family butcher would be better off, but unfortunately at the present level of trade this will be harmful to the family butcher because Joe Public will just say that beef is too dear without comparing it to the price of a pint at £3.50 or a packet of cigarettes at £8.

All averages were fantastic with the only downfall, which is regularly these days, was affected by Holstein/Friesian numbers, but if anything by comparison the Friesian Bulls would be the dearest averaging 194.40p/Kg (£1173.08), while the few Continentals forward averaged 220.78p/Kg (£1349.21).

Could you ever think that the OTM average could be 144.74p/Kg which says it all.

Top 25% OTM 184.90/Kg £1222.23

Bulls 223.86P/kg £1457.44

Steers 243.75P/kg £1688.52

Heifers 228.50P/kg £1291.12

STORE CATTLE

Auctioneer: Oliver Hiles

A better entry and some good quality amongst the cattle. Prices have risen considerably over the last couple of months making cattle very hard to value at home.

The best way to market your stores is under the hammer at Derby.

Breeding Cattle today saw old Hereford cows with a young Limousin Heifer calf at £920 from D Stanley, Leicester and In Calf Shorthorn Cows to £880.

In the Steers today was a super run of 2 year old, ¾ bred Limousins from Matthew Round, Thorpe that saw 4 at £1250 and 3 at £1230.

Younger suckled calf types saw a bunch of 4 weaned Limousins selling at £835 (9-10 months) from Guy Hadfield, Windley and a trio of Angus (8-9 months) sold at £790 from Mrs Shaw, Marchington, Peter Pugh, Pilsley sold 3 Limousin (17-18 months) at £860.

Very few Heifers about today but a pair of average Blues (3-4 months) in store condition topped the section at £1035.

The store cattle section at Derby continues to grow both in numbers and reputation. Have you got any to sell?
