FIGURES suggest families living in the Derbyshire Dales are among the fittest and active in the country.
A survey by Sport England has found that the percentage of Derbyshire Dales residents taking exercise at least three times a week has risen in the past year from 26.6 per cent to 29.2 per cent - which is the highest level in Derbyshire and the fifth highest level in England.
The annual Active People Survey measures the activity of people over 16 over a period of four weeks and compares recorded levels with other local authority areas.
Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Communities Committee, Councillor Carol Walker said: “These excellent statistics show the District Council is doing the right things to get people more active.
“We know from listening to local people that healthy lifestyles are a priority, and the District Council is proud of ongoing initiatives.
“We are fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful districts in the whole of the UK and, particularly at this time of year when people are determined to improve their health regimes, it’s great to make sport and physical activity readily available.
“It is also no coincidence that the numbers of people volunteering in sport locally have risen once again to 14.4 per cent - one of the highest levels in the country.
“It is this backbone of sport that helps our local clubs survive and thrive.”
