ASHBOURNE’S pioneering litter-busting campaign, LETS-LAST, is about to move into its most pro-active phase yet, and News Telegraph readers are being invited to play a closer part in the project.
Mr Sadler has spent the last three years urging people to pick up one item of litter a day, or seven pieces in a week, from the town’s streets. This group of people form the Litter Eradication Team Scheme (LETS).
The second aim of the unique project is to adopt a particular part of the town and keep an eye on litter levels, dubbed the Litter Adoption of a Section Team (LAST).
He said: “Now we wish to move into phase three of the campaign. That is preparing Ashbourne for finally calling in the TV cameras to show the rest of the country what we are achieving in the Ashbourne area through a large number of people involved in the LETS-LAST Litter Eradication Campaign.
“We are asking people to come along to a meeting with a view to joining a steering committee of people who are not only inspired by the project but have some spare time on their hands.” The meeting, at 6.30pm on Tuesday, September 21 in the Brailsford Room at the Miraj Hotel in Derby Road, will aim to assign people to set up a LETSLAST web site and email address, identify remaining black spots for litter to be cleaned up, and sign up the last few schools and businesses into the scheme.
Mr Sadler added: “Our objective is to promote Ashbourne and district in a way that increases visitor numbers, increases jobs, encourages more people to live in the area while at the same time making it a more pleasant place to live for those already here.” To find out more about the campaign or the project, or to contact Tim and pledge support call 01335 346306.
